When Ian and I first found out we were expecting we could barely contain our excitement. I started researching everything there was to know about pregnancy and started reading all the pregnancy and parenting books I could get my hands on.
One day, not long after we found out, I stumbled upon a due date calculator online and decided to input my information (just for fun until I could get to the doctor) and to my wonderful surprise it said I would be expecting Harley’s arrival December 2nd.
That date was confirmed a week later by my doctor.
This, so far, was the most exciting part of it all – we were going to have a baby for Christmas!
My excitement grew the more I thought about it.
Christmas is my absolute favourite time of year and the fact that we were going to be meeting our baby at that time was the cherry on top!
As the months passed and we found out we were going to be having a boy I began planning for that Christmas. I chose the date I would be starting my maternity leave, decided that we would be putting our decorations up early and just prepared for the arrival of my Special Christmas Helper, a nickname I gave him in the womb and which I’m using quite a bit these days.
The first week of my maternity leave I bought all the Christmas gifts I was going to be needing and my baking supplies.
In all my discomfort we decorated our apartment and baked cookies, all the while wishing and hoping Harley would pop out just a little bit earlier than expected. We were just too excited to share this time with him.
Then my due date passed and my doctor began talking about induction as she didn’t like her patients to go more than 1 week past their due date.
The days passed and still, no Harley. I was getting increasingly frustrated and I was beginning to feel pain everywhere. I just wanted him OUT!
Finally the day came when my labour started after getting my membranes swept by my doctor and even though I was in a ton of pain, I was still super excited to meet my little guy, my Special Christmas Helper.
Harley was born December 9th, 2014 at 7:41 p.m.
Finally, he was here, and just in time for Christmas!
He was definitely a spoiled baby last year! I bought him a reindeer sleeper to come home in and dressed in in Christmas-y sleepers and outfits every day.
This year he’s a little more aware of what’s going on. He just discovered the Christmas tree today and loves playing with the Santa doll we keep laying around the living room.
Ian and I can’t wait to start our own little traditions with him this year and already have some ideas for future Christmases.
I’m sure as the years pass he will begin loathe his cute little nickname I’ve given him, but until then I’m going to enjoy calling him my Special Christmas Helper and enjoy all the Christmas moments we’ll get together and as a family.
